La Axarquía - The encyclopedia & Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy defines the word "jarquía" (xarquía in old Spanish) as "district or territory located to the east of a large city (Malaga) and dependent on it", and says that it comes from the Arabic šarqíyya, which means "eastern part " or "eastern region."
